In a rather ground-breaking study, it was proven that dozens of genes are connected to depression. These genes can pose a higher risk of having depression, and explains another chapter of the complex nature of the same. Medication towards depression was always a problem, since the medication used not to work on everyone. Now that the genetic origins and impacts are found out, the scientific world is looking forward to unveil the hidden aspects of depression. 44 gene variants and variations were found out during the research, and all these variables have some impact on the possible risk of depression.
With this discovery, the whole approach towards the treatment of depression would take positive turns, at least in the long run. New kinds of therapies and treatments that cure the core issues are expected soon in the world. With the number of people suffering from depression increasing day by day, this research shows light and hope. According to the statistics, around 50% are able to get any improvements with the usage of drugs of psychotherapy. This new research would not only find out the reason behind the altered responses but also help in the process of devising methods that can actually get people out of the threat.
The study was quite massive and had analyzed the genome of 135,000 people who are suffering from various levels of depression. This data was then compared with the data received from the analysis of the genome of 350,000 people who do not have symptoms of depression. The study was published in Nature Genetics. According to the study, the genes being held responsible to the increased risk of depression are the same genes that are connected to other mental issues like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
That having said, it needs to be noted that no single gene is a major factor. Instead, the chances of depression are increased in an incremental manner, connected to multiple genes, each contributing to one aspect or the other.
