New Research Finds Out Dozens of Genes Connected to Depression

The study was quite massive and had analyzed the genome of 135,000 people who are suffering from various levels of depression. This data was then compared with the data received from the analysis of the genome of 350,000 people who do not have symptoms of depression. The study was published in Nature Genetics. According to the study, the genes being held responsible to the increased risk of depression are the same genes that are connected to other mental issues like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

That having said, it needs to be noted that no single gene is a major factor. Instead, the chances of depression are increased in an incremental manner, connected to multiple genes, each contributing to one aspect or the other.
